One of my must-stops in the summer is Muskoka Lakes Winery on The Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh in Bala, Ontario where I spent a lazy Sunday afternoon tasting some exquisite fruit wine. They’ve recently added an outdoor patio, where they serve wine by the glass and a seasonal Ontario cheese plate – in case you want to linger (you will).
If you like a sweet summer beverage, I recommend trading in those terrible wine coolers and trade-up for a delicious bottle of Cranberry Blueberry Wine. Just think of all the antioxidants when you are pouring yourself that second glass… am I right?
Launched in 2001 by The Johnston Family, the winery uses local fruit and their own cranberries to create their award-winning recipes. Wine tastings are all complimentary and we sampled 6-8 different dry, tart and sweet dessert wines. Take your favourite bottle home with you (from $16.95) and a bag of dark chocolate-covered cranberries.
I also purchased a bottle of pure cranberry juice with no sweetener added. It is absolutely perfect to add two tablespoons to a chilled glass of Perrier or Ginger Ale with a squirt of lime. Make sure you give also yourself some time for a hike through their Cranberry Trails.
I found lots of different cranberry products for sale including wine jelly, jams, spreads, juice, dried cranberries, cranberry tea, sauces, vinegars and chutneys. Anything you could do with a cranberry, they have done here! I can only imagine how Cranberry wine would be the most amazing pairing with Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.
Muskoka Lakes Winery also runs a Bog to Bottle Tour every day at 1pm. To plan a visit for next time you’re in Muskoka, check out:
