When it comes to weight loss and keeping the pounds off, it seems to be anybody’s guess what works and what doesn’t.
It often comes down to the individual person and their lifestyle. The strategies you choose can be endless – counting calories, weighing in, exercising, measuring food, drinking more water, “dieting”, eating more fibre, meal replacement shakes, hypnosis…the list goes on.
But what REALLY works?
A recent study demonstrated three strategies that helped people keep the pounds off long-term. Here’s what worked:
Women who completed food journals regularly lost significantly more weight.
Journaling helps keep you on target by being mindful everyday of what you are eating. Use your journal as a way to reflect on the day – what worked, what didn’t and other factors that may influence what you are eating (i.e. stress, sleep, exercise, hydration) – you may be surprised!
2) Eat Regularly!
Women who skipped meals lost LESS weight. Eating regularly helps keep your metabolism strong during the day and prevents cravings and overeating at meal times. Eat sensibly every 3-5 hours to keep the pounds off.

3) Avoid Restaurant Meals
No matter how many healthy substitutions you make when eating out, the calories, sodium and fat in restaurant food is usually higher than what you would eat at home. So save your waistline (and your pocket book) and cut back on eating out.

There is no magic trick to weight loss, the bottom line: hard work and common sense pays off.
