If I had to be stranded on any island in the world, Fashion Island – a mall in Newport Beach would be a top contender. If you’re headed to Orange County and want to do some serious damage this is THE place.
Fashion Island Mall has a few of my favourite stores including Jonathan Adler, Restoration Hardware, Bloomingdale’s and American Rag. It’s an easy drive if you happen to be visiting Disneyland or any of the other surrounding theme parks in Orange County.
Fashion Island is the quintessential California outdoor mall and there’s some pretty amazing food choices too. Make sure to check out Lemonade, Native Foods (vegetarian goodness) and True Food Kitchen (by Dr. Andrew Weil) if you’re in the mood for something quick and healthy. I would definitely come to the mall again as an Orange County day trip for lunch, shopping and then book a relaxing dinner after.
After we left the mall, we drove over to the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach to shop for unique arts and crafts pieces. I went CRAZY and bought myself a homemade ceramic spoon rest. I know – I’m living on the edge. The show has been running since 1966 and runs outdoors from the end of June to the start of September every year. If you need a break from the beaches of Orange County, this is a good place to head.
A glass blowing demonstration at the centre of the festival
Doing a little more shopping! The grounds of the festival are not actually covered in sawdust, but giant woodchips. If you’re concerned about something poking your feet, don’t wear sandals! If shopping is not your thing, there are food vendors, beer and live music to past the time.
Found a mushroom patch from one of the artisans at the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach. Perfect for a whimsical garden! Loved all the colours going on here.
