8 Slow Cooker Recipes To Try This Fall

The cool weather is finally here and with schedules getting busier, I’ve been pulling out my slow cooker more often. Paul and I have been prepping up 6-8 different recipes once a month and putting them in the freezer. I use this crock pot here.

It’s been great to have these on hand to whip a quick and healthy weeknight meal without all the prep and clean-up. Usually all I have to do is create a side dish like rice, steamed broccoli or salad and we have dinner and lots of leftovers for lunch the next day!

Here’s a round-up of a few of our favourite slow cooker recipes to try this week. If you can, prep a bunch of these on a Sunday, throw them into freezer bags and you’re good to go! (more…)

7 Ways To Save Money This Fall

via Inspired Taste

Welp, we bought a house last month and we’re going into lockdown for the next few months because of all the fees involved. We have closing costs, A LOT of furniture and appliances to buy, plus we need to cover the rent on our place in Portland AND our mortgage on our beach house until we can start renting it out in the spring.

If you’re trying to buckle down on your costs and spending, here are a few ideas on how-to save money this fall:

1) Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice Latte

That expensive $5 latte is also really easy to make at home and a great way to get your fall pumpkin fix. The DIY version lets you control the amount of sugar and natural ingredients that are in your drink – so you know exactly what’s in it. Here’s a great pumpkin spice latte recipe to try out! (more…)

5 Healthy Recipes to Try This Weekend

It’s almost the weekend!

I’ve picked out 5 healthy recipes I want to try out this weekend and thought I would share my finds with you. I’ve been trying to get into this whole meal prep thing so I can eat healthier at home, instead of caving and ordering Thai take-out when there’s nothing in the fridge. Lack of groceries and waiting until I’m absolutely starving always ends badly.

My game plan right now is to shop on Saturday and prep as much as I can for the week on Sunday. Sounds good in theory right? I know if I can get myself to do this, I will be setting myself up for success. So here are the healthy recipes I’ve picked out for the week:

Breakfast – To-Go Baked Oatmeal from The Wholesome Dish

Dessert – One-Ingredient Banana Ice Cream from That Clean Life (more…)

Homemade Cranberry Protein Bars

I’ve been making my own cranberry protein bars!

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Abigail Keeso & her That Clean Life program. Abigail is a Toronto-based Registered Nurse and Culinary Nutrition Expert who got me started on ‘clean eating’. Which for me means eating a low-gluten diet, reducing white flour and sugars and processed foods. I try to cook from scratch using whole ingredients as much as possible. It’s not about eating perfectly, but eating as well as possible.

For a mere $9/month I get access to Abigail’s recipe collection + her online meal planner which auto populates a grocery list for you! My membership fee supports Abigail’s business and her ability to develop new recipes for us every month. I feel like she is super-thorough with all her recipes and taste-testing. Everything tastes amazing and there’s rarely a recipe I dislike. She also aims to use minimal ingredients – which means you’re not scrambling over a complicated recipe + you can make it fancier if you like.

I recently made these Cranberry Energy Protein Bars and posted a photo online. I had a bunch of people ask me for the recipe and Abigail was so cool to let me re-publish here. I like to whip up a batch at the start of the week and I eat them as a snack. They are filling and packed full of protein

  • 3/4 cup Unsweetened Coconut Flakes
  • 1/2 cup Pecans (chopped)
  • 6 tablespoons Sesame Seeds
  • 1/4 cup Pumpkin Seeds
  • 1/4 cup Sunflower Seeds
  • 4 tablespoons Ground Flax Seed
  • 1/4 cup Dried Unsweetened Cranberries
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 4 tablespoons Raw Honey
  • 1/4 cup Sunflower Seed Butter

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Line a square 8×8 pan with parchment paper and lightly grease with some olive or coconut oil.
  2. Throw coconut, pecans, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds into a large frying pan. Place over medium-low heat and stir occasionally for 5 minutes or until lightly toasted. Remove from heat and place in a large mixing bowl with the ground flax seed, cranberries and sea salt.
  3. Add honey and sunflower seed butter into the mixing bowl and mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Transfer mix into the square pan and press down evenly. Take some time to really pack it in there. If you don’t pack it down firmly enough, the bars will crumble.
  4. Bake in oven for 15 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven and let cool completely. Once cool, lift parchment paper out of the tin and slice into bars with a sharp knife. Enjoy!

Blueberry Overnight Oats

Instead of diving into another crazy juice cleanse, I decided to re-visit a program that my friend Abigail Keeso (a Registered Nurse and Culinary Nutrition Expert) in Toronto created called That Clean Life.

I had first met Abigail when she asked if I would be interested in participating in a clean eating program that would have me eliminating refined flour, sugar, processed foods, red meat, alcohol, caffeine and gluten. It sounded like things I was already trying to reduce on my own and I liked that I could still include meat and lean protein into my diet and I wouldn’t be forced to eat vegan or raw. Paul and I loved Abigail’s recipes so much that we still cook many of them beyond the cleanse including these Kale + Quinoa Fritters.

Fast forward to January 2015 and Abigail, along with her partner – Christopher Hopkins had launched That Clean Life – an online portal with all of her recipes and an online meal planner. My favourite part is that it auto-populates your grocery list based on the recipes you choose. The cost? $9/month! That’s the price of two lattes – so I signed up immediately in support of Abigail & Chris’ work. (more…)

Kale Quinoa Fritters with Tangy Avocado Sauce

Kale Quinoa Fritters Avocado Sauce

By: Abigail Keeso

Love kale?

I was inspired by a kale quinoa burger recipe I had seen floating around but the only problem was that it was packed full of unclean ingredients like processed cheese and bread crumbs. I swapped the dirty out and brought in the clean and voila! Perfection for my #thatcleanlife Spring Break Detox Challenge.

I called it a fritter but really, it could work as a burger. It’s best served on a bed of greens topped with the delicious Tangy Avocado Sauce. 100% clean and so, so, soooo delicious. Packed full of protein, dark leafy greens and topped with a dose of healthy fat with a zing of vitamin C. I like to make up a double batch, cook em’ all up and then freeze them. They are great to pull out of the freezer and reheat when you are running short on time.

So without further ado, here’s the recipe:
