I know the winter can seem long, even living in Portland. The days can be cloudy, rainy with only small bursts of sun. People say that your first winter here is the hardest and they aren’t kidding. I haven’t had to deal with a full season of winter in almost three years so I’ve been in for a rude awakening.
Paul went crazy buying jeans when we first moved here because he only owned shorts when we moved here. I just finally got caught up and order pants and sweaters to replace my year-round Cali wardrobe of sundresses. I’m definitely craving warmth and sunshine right now to break up all this grey.
If you’re feeling just blegh about the weather, here are a couple of my favourite warm weather getaway ideas that I would suggest to get your summer fix! (more…)
I had a lovely first visit to Austin – Texas this past October! I spent a lot of time walking around this charming city and thought I would share a few tips on my favourite things to eat, see and do in Austin.
Getting There – We flew direct to Austin from LAX and scored a round-trip ticket for $200 each. Getting from the airport to downtown was maybe a $15 uber ride max. We walked pretty much everywhere, took ubers when we needed them and rented a car for a day to explore outside of the city.
Where To Stay – The brand new JW Marriott Hotel in Austin is one of the newest and fanciest hotels in town. We were not disappointed by our stay and the hotel’s central location downtown. They have an incredible Italian restaurant on-site that makes all of their pasta in-house! Make sure you spend some time sunning yourself next to their rooftop pool. You can read my full feature on the hotel here.
Eat a Breakfast Taco – Taco Shack, Tacodeli, Torchy’s Tacos are a great place to start. I ended up going to The Taco Shack as it was right around the corner from my hotel and got a coveted Breakfast Taco. I chose scrambled eggs, potatoes and chorizo in a flour tortilla with a little bit of salsa on top. One was enough to fill me up! (more…)
Happy November! Paul and I just returned from a week in Austin, Texas and will have lots of great things to share with you from our visit. We were so lucky to be able to stay at the JW Marriott Austin right in the heart of downtown. The hotel was built from the ground-up and recently opened this past summer.
In terms of location, we were never more than a $5-10 Uber ride from all the great shops on South Congress or the bars around town. We could easily walk to dinner and some of the major shopping districts around Austin.
A DIY Margarita Bar with Chips + Homemade Salsa welcomed me in my room! (more…)
Have you been to Dallas before?
I had no idea what to expect during my recent visit to Dallas, Texas. I was imagining cowboys and football but what I got was a culturally-rich city with a vibrant food scene, award-winning architecture with thoughtful green spaces.
Getting There – I flew into Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and caught a cab into the downtown core. Luckily, my hotel at Homewood Suites Downtown featured a complimentary shuttle service which took me anywhere less than 15 minutes away and a DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) stop was located just outside my door.
