Hilton Quebec – Quebec City

I won a trip to Quebec City last year and I was finally able to take a road trip out to this beautiful place with my sister this past spring. You can read all about our adventures here. I haven’t been to Quebec since Paul went on a work trip in 2003 and it was lovely to return here again. One of the places we stayed at on this trip was the Hilton Quebec.

The Hilton Quebec is located on Parliament Hill and directly connected to the Quebec City Convention Centre. It’s a perfect choice if you’re visiting for work, but also convenient for everyday travel because you are steps away from all the charming shops and restaurants in Old Quebec. The hotel itself was bustling with conference-goers, families and tourists just like us. I actually enjoyed how lively it was as the lobby bar was packed during the final showdown for the Montreal Canadiens during the finals.

The Hilton Quebec features 571 newly renovated rooms with views overlooking the gorgeous St. Lawrence River. If you’re looking to relax or keep up with your gym routine, there is a heated year-round outdoor pool and a 24 hour fitness centre on-site.

Hotel 71 – Quebec City

I took a little road trip to Quebec City with my sister last month after I had won a trip from a tourism board luncheon. We spent two nights at the lovely Hotel 71 located in Old Quebec. This boutique property features 60 rooms, a business centre, complimentary WiFi and fitness room. It was the perfect little hip hotel for us to do some exploring from.

I loved the apartment loft-style feel to our boutique hotel suite. The room had a lot of character and charm, including a warm brick wall, lots of lamps and a small living room area with a pull-out couch. It was a nice change from the typical cookie-cutter style hotel and incredibly comfortable right from the get go.

Each room also features an in-room safe, refrigerator and bathrobes. If you loved any of the bedding, toiletries or hotel amenities – a sleek boutique on the first floor features favourites from the hotel. (more…)

Travel Guide: Quebec City, Canada

I flew back to Toronto last month to attend Paul’s cousin’s wedding in Kingston. They had this amazing pie instead of a wedding cake and we cruised into the sunset through the 1000 Islands.

But before the festivities, I booked a trip to Quebec City with my sister Amy and spent a fun week eating and exploring our way through La Belle Province and even stopped at this unique spa on a boat on our way home. Quebec City is currently ranked the no. 1 destination in Canada by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine and the walled city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Treasure. Here are a few of our travel tips for Quebec City:

Getting There – From Toronto there are direct flights on Porter and Air Canada. Otherwise, you can connect from any other city via Montreal. Honda Canada was nice enough to lend us a brand new Honda CRV, so we chose to make a sisters road trip out of it. We left at around 10 AM after the traffic died down and the drive takes about 9 hours. We took our time, made lots of stops along the way including:

Panache Restaurant – Quebec City

After subsisting on kale salads and pressed juice while living in Los Angeles, I arrived in Quebec City earlier this month and my stomach growled, “Bring on the cheese!” and all the wonderfully rich French food that I have been missing.

When an invitation from Panache came for my sister and I, we rushed eagerly to one of Quebec’s finest restaurants to sample their Signature Tasting Menu. Panache is located inside the charming Auberge Saint-Antoine, a Relais & Chateaux property inside Old Quebec City. The restaurant features Quebecoise cuisine with a modern twist.

Our tasting menu began with Foie Gras with Lentils and Orange zest swimming in a rich veloute sauce. As soon as the plates were brought to our table, I could smell the fresh zest – scattered around three meaty pieces of foie with a sprinkle of lentils. The Chef brought over a small saucepan and poured the hot veloute over our dish. We devoured it instantly.

We continued our meal with a White Lake Fish, marinated with Kaffir lime leaves and garnished with mini potatoes, watercress and a bit of fish tartare. The buttery fish flaked tenderly onto my fork and the hint of lime flavour made this one of my favourite dishes of the night. It was simple, yet perfect. (more…)

I’m Heading to Quebec City!

I’m packing my bags and heading to the airport today because I’m off to Quebec City!

Yes, there are some nervous butterflies about getting on an airplane that I talked about recently – but I’m hoping that I can get it under control and not let it overshadow this girls getaway with my sister Amy. I’ll be landing in Toronto first, then picking up our sweet ride – a Honda CRV from our friends at Honda Canada and then making the 8-hour road trip with stops along the way to Quebec City.

One of my first stops will likely be a St. Hubert’s for their chicken + Chez Ashton’s for their poutine!

See you in La Belle Province!
