Where To Eat in Venice Beach, California

I’ve been living in Portland for about 3.5 months now and I am most definitely getting homesick for my friends + all the local spots I found during my time living next to Venice Beach.

Empanada Heaven at Nonna’s Empanadas

I have had a serious craving for empanadas.

I came across Nonna’s Empanadas in Los Angeles via Pinterest and stopped in for lunch when I attended the Saks Off 5th launch just around the corner a few weeks ago. OMG, these empanadas are little pillows of heaven and remind me of these empanadas that I am homesick for back in Toronto.

Nonna’s Empanadas is a cute little family-owned cafe with quick-serve service just near Cedars-Sinai Hospital. There’s a shaded patio for seating, however parking is scant – so I recommend circling for street parking or walking over from a paid lot.

To get a little taste of it all, I opted for the $10 combo which nets you your choice of three empanadas and a drink. The Corn Empanada was a surprise hit with big juicy kernels of corn trapped in a web of melty, string cheese. I would get this again in a heartbeat.

Individually, Nonna’s Empanadas range in price from $3.25-$3.95 depending on the filling, so the combo is a great deal. My only wish was that they had a healthy side salad on the menu to counter the empanadas OR perhaps a combo with a salad! (more…)

SUPER Soup Dumplings at Din Tai Fung – Los Angeles

A few of the restaurants run by the same owners even have a Michelin star attached to them. Since I was finally settled in LA and my parents were in town, I decided a visit to its Arcadia location was in order. (more…)
