I’ve been living in Portland for about 3.5 months now and I am most definitely getting homesick for my friends + all the local spots I found during my time living next to Venice Beach.

While traveling to Calgary, I had my own personal donut showdown at Jelly Modern Doughnuts. I had heard of this artisan donut boutique through various Calgary contacts and from the fact that they have opened three locations in my hometown of Toronto. Hunkering down with a large coffee, I devoured two of their mini 3-bite donuts in Classic Jelly and Salted Caramel (above).
The most popular flavour of all is the Maple Bacon donut – nom! I found the yeast donuts to be very light and airy with no overpowering oily taste. Chef Grayson Sherman uses high quality organic and local products whenever possible and fry the donuts in a combination of palm and canola oil which is changed regularly. If you’re frying donuts at home Grayson suggests keeping a close eye on your oil temperature and not overcrowding the pan to avoid that oily taste. (more…)
I have been living with white walls ever since we moved into our LA townhome in July. We are currently renting until we figure out which neighbourhood we would like to eventually settle into.
Since it’s a rental, painting the walls is sort of off-limits and I have been pretty comittment-phobic about investing into big, expensive pieces or any sort of art. SO when I came across the whimsical donut wrapping paper ($2.50 for one sheet) at Paper Source the other day, I thought it would be the perfect fun piece of art to frame it and put into my kitchen.
