Hotel Arts + Yellow Door Bistro, Calgary

Hotel-Arts-Calgary

During a trip to Calgary, Alberta – I had the chance to stay for the second time at this cute boutique hotel right in the downtown core. Hotel Arts is a comfortable and modern hotel within walking distance of all the amazing sights, shopping and restaurant if you are planning a visit to Calgary.

My suite (above) was so spacious and equipped with a wet bar that I regret not throwing a huge party while I was there 😉 It would be pretty perfect for a bachelorette party actually.

My room at Hotel Arts overlooked the courtyard and year-round heated pool. With 185 suites and very reasonable nightly rates, I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family looking for an affordable and stylish option in Calgary. (more…)

A Weekend in Banff

Banff-Mountains

Happy Travel Tuesday! I wanted to share one of my favourite posts with you about one of my all-time favourite getaways – Banff, Alberta. It is gorgeous in the spring and definitely worth a look for a last-minute getaway this time of year. Hope you enjoy. xo – Lisa

I am in love with Banff.

I paid my very first visit to Banff National Park in Alberta last month and I couldn’t believe I had waited so long to experience the beauty that is Banff. From the fresh Rocky Mountain air, crystal clear blue water and wildlife along the highway – the whole thing felt oh-so-Canadian and right.

Rocky-Mountains

The drive from Calgary to Banff takes around 90 minutes along a busy highway where the Rocky Mountains just smee to appear out of nowhere along stretches of prairie plains. There are lots of easy hiking trails with a waterfall reward like Johnston Canyon and the scenic Banff Gondola which gives you a 360 degree mountain view from the top of the clouds. Make sure to pack your bathing suit for a hot mineral soak at the Banff Upper Hot Springs or buy a $69 day pass to access the luxurious water circut at The Willow Stream Spa inside the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Banff also has one of the longest ski seasons in North America and usually runs into Victoria Day long weekend. Make sure to pack your gear and hit the slopes at Sunshine Village. (more…)

This Beautiful Life: Connie DeSousa

Connie-Desousa

When I’m not seeing her compete in a triathalon on Instagram or stalking following her culinary adventures in Mauritius Island, Connie DeSousa is the chef and co-owner of the wildly successful CHARCUT Roast House in Calgary.

I met Connie during a press trip where I was blown away by all the amazing food at her restaurant. She is absolutely lovely and is currently competing to be the next Marilyn Expert on The Marilyn Denis Show. Meet Connie everyone!

How did you end up with a career in the culinary arts?

Food has always been a very important part of my life. With my Portuguese Father from the Azores and my Irish-Canadian mother, I have a lot of fond memories of both cultures and their very different styles of cooking. Blood sausage showdowns between Mom and Dad weren’t unusual at the DeSousa household. I’m often asked which one was better…the traditional Portuguese Morcela or the Irish Blood Pudding? In my books – my mom’s was the winner but please don’t tell my Dad!

I enrolled in the Professional Cooking Program right out of high school and graduated with honors on the Dean’s List. I started cooking professionally with my mentor John Jackson, who is my co-chef today at our restaurant CHARCUT Roast House. (more…)
