I have had a serious craving for empanadas.
I came across Nonna’s Empanadas in Los Angeles via Pinterest and stopped in for lunch when I attended the Saks Off 5th launch just around the corner a few weeks ago. OMG, these empanadas are little pillows of heaven and remind me of these empanadas that I am homesick for back in Toronto.
Nonna’s Empanadas is a cute little family-owned cafe with quick-serve service just near Cedars-Sinai Hospital. There’s a shaded patio for seating, however parking is scant – so I recommend circling for street parking or walking over from a paid lot.
To get a little taste of it all, I opted for the $10 combo which nets you your choice of three empanadas and a drink. The Corn Empanada was a surprise hit with big juicy kernels of corn trapped in a web of melty, string cheese. I would get this again in a heartbeat.
Individually, Nonna’s Empanadas range in price from $3.25-$3.95 depending on the filling, so the combo is a great deal. My only wish was that they had a healthy side salad on the menu to counter the empanadas OR perhaps a combo with a salad!
Next up was the Chicken Verde Empanada with big chunks of chicken smothered in a salsa verde sauce. Not too spicy at all, but packed full of flavour. Make sure you grab some free mild or hot chimichurri sauce from the mini-fridge on the left of the cash for dipping.
The Beef Empanada is a classic and the all-around favourite for me with seasoned ground beef filling, onions and red pepper. I was bummed that this empanada didn’t have any egg, but the Jalapeno Beef Empanada did – which means I’m ordering that next time. Each empanada is stamped on the front with its flavor, so there’s no guessing which is which.
Nonna’s Empanadas also offers big takeout boxes for catering, so you can look like a hero when you show up with a dozen homemade empanadas at your next party. You seriously can’t beat this selection.
What I liked best about Nonna’s Empanadas is that they don’t have that greasy, deep-fried taste that I’ve encountered at other places because they are baked. I didn’t have room for dessert or any of their sweet empanadas this time around, but they definitely look interesting!
If you check-in on Yelp, they give you a free cookie. Do stop by if you find yourself in the neighbourhood and grab some empanadas to go. Nonna’s Empanadas is a new LA favourite for me.
