Trying to get cozy?
It seriously feels like winter already, even though the official date isn’t until a month away. When the weather gets cold, I’m always craving big warm bowls of comfort food that make the house smell amazing. I’ve been experimenting with a couple different recipes lately – here are a few to definitely try out this winter:
1) Chicken Soup with Dumplings
Soup has to be one of my all-time favourite foods and this hearty bowl of homemade chicken soupwith big chewy dumplings does the trick for me. Make a big pot at the start of the week and throw it into a cute thermos for work the next day. This soup is also super quick to prepare and is a great weeknight meal.
2) Roasted Carrot + Spinach Quinoa Bowl
I made this delicious roasted carrot + spinach bowl recently and I’m definitely keeping this hearty and healthy option in my lunch rotation. Make a big batch at the start of the week and separate into individual containers for a healthy lunch all week. Roasting brings out some really great flavours out of your vegetables.

3) Slow Cooker Baked Beans
I definitely loved baked beans as a kid. However making your own ensures that you know what’s going into it and you’re not loading up all sorts of weird preservatives. This recipe is easy to make and cooks slowly in your crock pot.
4) Roasted Garlic Farfalle Pasta with Bacon + Peas
I blame the Cheesecake Factory for getting me addicted to this one. My version is a little bit healthier, but still super creamy with a hit of garlic flavour and salt from the bacon. I also leave out the chicken as I’m just happy with you know, MORE bacon. My recipe here for Roasted Garlic Farfalle Pasta with Bacon + Peas.
5) French Canadian Tourtiere Meat Pie
I have always loved tourtiere at Christmas time. Paul’s family is French-Canadian and it’s a Christmas Eve tradition to have a meat pie that night with some chili sauce or ketchup and vegetables. Since we moved away, I’ve tried to make my own and came up with this recipe for French Canadian Tourtiere.
Make a big pie on Sunday and enjoy it all week. It also freezes and keeps well for leftovers.
6) Mini Beef Meatloaf Muffins
Meatloaf is definitely a top winter comfort food for me. I love this mini version, because it’s great for portion sizing and freezing. Just serve with some mashed potatoes and frozen peas + carrots for an easy weeknight dinner idea.

7) Tomato + Vegetable Pasta Soup Jars
If you’re into meal prepping, this one is super easy to get going on a Sunday. I buy pre-spiralized zucchini to speed things up. Just pour into a bowl to warm up in the microwave at work or dump it all into a pot for a fast dinner at home. My recipe for Tomato + Vegetable Pasta Soup Jars.
