During my recent visit to Toronto in February, I had the chance to catch up with my sister Amy over dinner at the very fancy Cafe Boulud. Amy has been so great about managing my mail for me while I was gone, that this was the perfect place to bring her for a special occassion thank you dinner.
If you’ve never been to Cafe Boulud, I highly recommend it for any sort of celebration or even a fancy dinner out with the girls. You will be raving over every morsel you put in your mouth in one of the most elegant dining rooms in Toronto.
Located on the mezzanine level of the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, Café Boulud serves a menu inspired by Chef Daniel Boulud’s French roots. You may have seen him dishing with Anthony Bourdain on a recent episode of Parts Unknown. I watched that episode and couldn’t wait to taste his food myself!
The Nova Scotia Lobster Salad (top left) is a must-order and great to share with a group. The dramatic claw centrepiece does not disappoint with lots of meaty chunks amongst the iceberg lettuce, and marinated quail’s egg. The salad is finished off with a cucumber avocado cream.
My second favourite dish of the the night had to be The Potato Wrapped Sea Bass (bottom left) is the perfect juxtaposition with a crispy outer layer and a buttery soft fish on the inside. The sea bass lies on top of a glorious bed of pommes purée, and is garnished with glazed leeks, a side of watercress, and finished with a sauce meurette. It is everything I could never do to my fish at home!
For dessert, my sis and I dove into a Pear & Pistachio (bottom right) creation with pistachio dacqouise, vanilla foam, pear mousse, and pistachio ice cream. The whole thing was creamy and delightful.
No my dessert is not wearing a toupee! It’s the Grapefruit Givre ($12) with sesame halva, rose loukoum, and grapefruit sorbet on the inside of the hallowed out citrus shell. Since I LOVE grapefruit, I loved every bite of this inventive dessert – especially its edible furry wig. The crushed ice made for a pretty presentation and kept my dessert from melting away.
Chef Daniel Boulud (right) has won a Michelin star, and a James Beard award among his many accolades. Boulud has several other restaurants in cities such as Las Vegas, New York City, Montreal, Singapore and London. However you don’t have to venture far to taste the exquisite dishes designed by Boulud.
