If you told me that 2016 was the year I was going to build a house – I would’ve laughed. In fact, Paul and I had our heart set on buying a condo in the Pearl District of Portland but we are SO glad this ended up happening instead.
I’m finally entering the decorating phase of our new beach house on the Oregon coast!
I fully acknowledge how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to work on a project like this. It’s like getting the chance to design our dream house, except we don’t exactly get to live in it full-time.
So comes the beach house balancing act.
Part of me wants to blow the budget and get things like these Crate & Barrel beds that I’ve been eyeing. The other part of me is like, “Woah, slow down. This is a rental property and people are probably going to wreck stuff – it can’t be helped.” As much as I love Ikea, I’m trying to find a middle ground between that and Crate & Barrel.
I splurged on upgrading the bathroom vanities, tile work and hardwood floors – stuff I couldn’t easily change down the road. I figured I need to be mindful of the budget when it comes to the furniture. So I’m referring back to this list I made – sticking to places like Target, World Market, Wayfair for our faucets, Joss & Main for our vanity, Overstock and other places with stylish pieces that are inexpensive and easily replaced if need be.
I’m designing this Pinterest-y house that I would like to live in, but also being mindful of the kind of clean, minimal and bright space people like me would want to rent. It’s part picking what I want, balancing it with what I think guests would want and sticking within a reasonable budget.
It can be a little overwhelming at times, but I’m really enjoying the ride and trying to remember that this is also an investment. We are just ONE WEEK away from moving our stuff in and then I’m putting this project on blast and getting it furnished and styled as quickly as possible.
Paul and I just bought our washer, dryer and fridge last month from Home Depot. We opened a credit card and don’t have to pay for a year – which is great for spreading out the cost. Since it was an early Black Friday sale – we also scored 40% off!
My goal is to have this house up on airbnb by February 1st, which gives me a month-and-a-half to get it where it needs to be. So that’s where we’re at for now! I’ll be posting more updates as we get closer to the move-in.
Thanks for following along!
