We’ve reached a whole new level of hippie-dippy health since moving to LA.
If you said the words ‘Acai Berry Bowl’ back in Toronto – I would look at you funny and ask you to say it again and order another plate of french fries.
Oh how the healthy California culture is changing ME.
I’ve tried everything from juice cleanses, green smoothies and raw food diets. Always on the lookout for something new – I’ve started to rotate in Acai Berry Bowls into my breakfast twice a week and I really do LOVE them.
It all started when I was trying reduce the amount of bread, potatoes and pasta in my diet – so breakfast was a great place to start. The Acai (ah-sah-yee) berry is a superfood high in antioxidants – the Acai Berry Bowl is like a frozen smoothie bowl that you eat and top with all kinds of delicious things. I find that the bowls give me a TON of energy and I’ve started to buy the Acai packs that have guarana added to them (great for people who don’t drink coffee).
I buy frozen packs of Acai berry ‘slush’ from Whole Foods, Costco or even online from Amazon. Just look in the freezer section near the frozen fruit or breakfast foods. So here’s how you make a Acai Berry Bowl:
- 1 frozen pack of Acai berry – I use this brand.
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup of almond milk or apple juice or coconut water
- Sliced bananas
- Sliced Strawberries
- Slivered Almonds
- Shredded Coconut Flakes
- Cacao Nibs
- Hemp Hearts
- Break the frozen pack up under running hot water, until you can squeeze it into your blender.
- Pulse with your banana and choice of liquid until it’s still thick enough to spoon up. Don’t liquify too much. If you want it a bit thicker, you can add some ice.
- Add toppings and enjoy!
Have you ever tried an Acai Bowl? What did you think?
